Installation of SmartSide Siding
LP SmartSide is a type of engineered wood made from aspen strands. These strands are coated with resin binders and zinc borate, which helps resist decay and insect damage in West End’s humid climate. The strands are pressed into panels or lap boards, creating a strong material that changes less with humidity than regular cedar siding.
For homes in West End, we start by removing the old siding to check the sheathing. Then, we wrap the walls with a breathable water-resistive barrier. Our team fastens SmartSide using stainless steel nails, back-priming all cuts to seal the edges. We leave a 3 mm gap at butt joints and a 150 mm clearance from the ground to prevent water from splashing up, while caulking around trim blocks to keep out rain.
In West End, the wall system is designed to drain and vent moisture. The siding serves as the main rain screen, while a hidden drainage plane helps manage any moisture that gets through. We often install LP SmartSide over vertical furring strips to create a gap that allows air to circulate and helps the back of the siding dry evenly, reducing the risk of rot.
We also use flashing to manage moisture at openings. Head flashings with bent edges direct water away, while sill pan flashings under windows stop water from pooling and soaking into the wall. At corners, we use two-piece flashing behind the siding trim to ensure that water flows out without reaching the sheathing. This setup is designed for West End’s long wet seasons, minimizing reliance on caulk.
