Glass and Aluminum Specs

Aluminum railing frames are made from 6063-T5 alloy. This material is strong and resists corrosion, especially in coastal areas. The posts are usually 2 inches square and have a powder-coated or anodized finish. This finish helps them withstand the salt air and rain in Metro Vancouver. Glass panels are held in place with heavy-gauge stainless steel clamps or continuous base channels. There are no exposed fasteners that could trap moisture.

Tempered safety glass is standard. It is usually 6 to 10 millimeters thick, depending on the size of the panel and wind exposure. Laminated glass has a plastic layer for extra shatter resistance, but it needs stronger framing. Polished edges and precise fabrication ensure the panels fit tightly without rattling or stress points.

Load and Moisture Control

Each railing post transfers side loads directly into the deck structure. This is done through a base plate that is bolted to the rim joist or solid blocking between joists. This connection must handle the force from a person leaning on the top rail. Structural screws or through-bolts with large washers help prevent pull-out. Blocking makes the attachment point stronger and spreads the load across multiple framing members.

Managing moisture is important where aluminum meets wood. Standoff base plates lift the post slightly above the deck surface. This allows water to drain and air to circulate, reducing the risk of rot. Where posts go through a waterproof membrane, a custom flashing boot and sealant keep water from entering. Small gaps at joints allow for the natural movement of aluminum without causing warping.

Bylaw Compliance for Railings

In the City of Vancouver, glass and aluminum railings on decks, balconies, and exterior stairs must follow the Vancouver Building By-law. Guards are needed wherever the drop is more than 600 mm. Most exterior guards must be at least 1,070 mm high. For drops over 4.2 m, guards must be designed to stop climbing, which usually means using vertical pickets or glass infill.

In the City of Surrey, building glass or aluminum railings for a new or larger deck usually needs a building permit. Permit applications must include detailed drawings that show guard height, railing design, and structural details that meet BC Building Code rules.

In the District of North Vancouver, decks more than 600 mm above grade need a permit. Glass or aluminum guards must be at least 900 mm high for drops up to 1.8 m. For decks over 1.8 m above grade, guard height must increase to at least 1,070 mm, and a top cap is required along with following BC Building Code guard rules.
