LP SmartSide Siding
LP SmartSide siding is made from wood strands coated with waxes, resins, and zinc borate. These strands are pressed into panels using heat and pressure. This process creates a strong and stable material. A layer applied in the factory makes it resistant to impacts and helps paint stick well. This engineered core also resists swelling at cut edges, which can be a problem in wet climates.
The product line includes lap siding, vertical panels, and trim boards in different textures and widths. Lap pieces are installed using a blind-nailing pattern through the nailing hem, which keeps the face free of fasteners. Each course overlaps the one below by at least 1 inch, helping to direct water outward. Proper spacing at butt joints and trim allows for seasonal movement without causing buckling.
Behind the siding, a ventilated rainscreen cavity helps moisture drain and dry. Furring strips over the weather-resistant barrier create an air gap, breaking capillary action. This gap reduces the pressure that can push water inward, allowing the wall to dry quickly after rain.
Flashing at windows, doors, and horizontal trim directs water away from the wall. Siding Permit Requirements

In Burnaby, the Noise or Sound Abatement Bylaw limits when LP SmartSide installation can happen. Exterior construction is usually allowed from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday. No construction noise is allowed on Sundays or holidays. Continuous noise must stay at or below 85 dBA when measured at least 15.2 metres away in residential, multi-family, public, or institutional areas.
