Hillside Railing Installation
The base shoe is anchored directly to the deck structure with stainless steel bolts, not just surface screws. On hillside decks, we shim the shoe to level before securing it. This keeps the railing plumb despite any slope. The aluminum posts fit into the shoe and are fastened with set screws, creating a strong connection.
The glass panels are 6mm or 8mm tempered safety glass, cut to fit between posts. They sit in a U-channel within the shoe, cushioned by glazing gaskets. These gaskets absorb vibration and prevent glass from touching metal. On exposed West Bay decks, we use marine-grade 316 stainless steel hardware to resist the salt air, not standard 304.
For top rail attachment, a continuous aluminum cap snaps over the glass and posts. It locks with hidden fasteners. This creates a unified load path from the glass to the posts to the deck. The powder-coat finish on all aluminum components meets AAMA 2604 standards for coastal corrosion resistance, keeping the railing easy to maintain.
On exposed West Bay hillsides, wind can gust off the water and create uplift forces on glass panels. The railing system is designed to transfer these loads through the glass into the posts and then into the deck structure. Each post is anchored with bolts that go through the deck sheathing and tie into the joists or blocking below, not just the surface board. This prevents pull-out under high wind.
Moisture management is critical. The base shoe is installed with a slight gap above the deck surface to allow water to drain freely. This prevents standing moisture that can speed up corrosion. We apply a continuous bead of marine-grade sealant under the shoe where it meets the deck, directing water away from the anchor points. Any water that gets behind the shoe drains out through weep holes at the bottom of the shoe extrusion.
The aluminum parts are thermally broken where they touch the deck to reduce condensation and galvanic corrosion. Stainless steel fasteners are separated from the aluminum with nylon washers to prevent corrosion from different metals in the salty air. This isolation detail is standard for coastal installations and helps ensure the railing’s strength for many years.
Railing Regulations in West Bay
The District of West Vancouver’s Zoning Bylaw 4662 limits how tall a railing or privacy screen can be near property lines. In West Bay, a glass or aluminum guard higher than about 1.1 m at a boundary may be treated as a structure, which affects setbacks and may need extra permissions.
Approved development permits in West Vancouver set clear guard requirements. Exterior guards must be at least 42 inches high. Openings in the guard must not be more than 4 inches wide, and designs must not allow climbing. Glass panels usually need a top cap unless a professional engineer says otherwise.
The BC Building Code, as used by the District of West Vancouver, governs railing design. Guards for one dwelling unit can be 900 mm high if the deck is under 1.8 m above grade; otherwise, they must be 1070 mm high. Glass railings need engineered design and typically a continuous top cap.
