Board and Batten Installation
In Ocean Park, fiber cement board and batten is popular because it withstands the damp, salty air without swelling or rotting. Panels are cut to size and primed on all edges before installation to prevent moisture from getting in. Installers use stainless steel ring-shank nails to attach the boards, which helps avoid rust streaks that can damage painted surfaces.
Installers put vertical pressure-treated furring strips over the weather barrier, creating a gap of 10mm to 19mm for air circulation. The wide boards are attached to the strips, leaving space at the ends for expansion. Battens cover the seams of the boards and are nailed through the gap into the furring, allowing the boards to move independently.
Ocean Park’s frequent wind-driven rain requires a cladding system that drains and ventilates well. The gap behind the siding helps balance air pressure, which reduces water from being sucked into the wall. Any moisture that gets into the cavity drains down the water-resistive barrier and exits through weep holes at the bottom.
Fastening patterns need to resist uplift and lateral wind loads, which are stronger near the coast. Boards are nailed into the furring at each stud location, following the edge distance and spacing set by manufacturer guidelines for high-wind areas. Flashing around windows and doors directs water outward, keeping the drainage plane intact.
