In Surrey, a secondary suite is allowed only if the home meets zoning conditions. The zoning bylaw also limits basement access and basement wells to the area between the main building and the rear lot line. It caps them at 28 square metres, including stairs.
To legalize or install a new or existing secondary suite in Surrey, the homeowner must obtain the necessary building permits. They must also meet the BC Building Code. This means that any work related to a basement suite cannot proceed as an unpermitted renovation.
