For homes in Edgemont Village, we use .032-gauge aluminum in a K-style profile. This design has a flat back for secure mounting and a decorative front that won’t bend under the weight of a ladder. In areas where roofs shed water quickly, we often upgrade to 6-inch troughs with 3-by-4-inch downspouts to handle the water without overflowing.
We screw hangers directly into rafter tails every two feet, not just into the fascia board. This supports the full weight of a trough filled with water and debris. We set the slope using a laser level to ensure at least a quarter inch of fall for every ten feet, so water doesn’t pool. We place downspouts at corners and at intervals to prevent sagging, and we extend discharge points well past the foundation to protect the building.
