Building Permits for Government Road
The City of Burnaby requires a building permit for exterior renovations that affect the building envelope, like adding or upgrading exterior insulation. Your application must include letters from a qualified building envelope professional. Inspections are needed after you install insulation and the vapour barrier, before any work is covered up.
Work must follow local noise bylaws. These limit construction-related noise to specific hours: generally from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. No construction noise is allowed on Sundays and statutory holidays. Continuous construction noise must not exceed 85 dBA at 15.2 m in residential areas.
Projects that add or change exterior insulation must have a building permit and pass inspections for insulation and the vapour barrier. If you apply for a permit after September 1, 2019, an air-tightness (blower door) test is required before the insulation inspection.
