Moisture-Managed Cedar Installation
We use vertical grain heartwood for cedar siding in Surrey because its tight grain resists cupping when it gets wet. Every board gets an alkyd-oil primer on all six sides before installation. This seals the wood against moisture and incidental water. We use stainless steel ring-shank nails to prevent rust and hold the boards in place during seasonal changes.
We space the boards with a 1/8-inch gap to allow for swelling without buckling. Every cut end is sealed with a paintable elastomeric sealant. Behind the siding, we build a ventilated rainscreen with vertical furring strips that helps moisture escape, allowing the cedar to dry from both sides.
