Moisture behind the paint causes wood trim to rot. In Vancouver’s damp climate, that decay can spread to siding and structural framing. A simple paint touch-up can lead to costly repairs.
Aluminum capping enhances the look of your windows and doors. It seals the joints where trim meets the wall and requires no scraping or repainting. Enjoy a fresh exterior without the hassle of upkeep.

Protect Your Trim
When your window and door trim starts to peel and rot, moisture is getting behind the wood. That moisture can damage the framing and lead to expensive repairs. Window and Door Capping keeps water out for good.
Instead of scraping and painting every few years, aluminum capping gives you a tough, maintenance-free finish. It’s custom-made to fit your existing trim, so it looks clean and sharp. It never needs painting. Your home stays protected and looks great from the street.
Paragon Exteriors brings the same trim protection to homeowners in Ocean Park. Our window and door capping stops moisture and rot before they start. You can enjoy an exterior that stays protected even near the water.
Ocean Park’s coastal climate fades siding and weathers decks fast. Capping your trim with aluminum helps the whole exterior last longer. Your home stays looking fresh without constant work.
Aluminum Capping Specs
The capping material is usually aluminum coil stock that is 0.019 to 0.024 inches thick. It comes pre-finished with a baked-on PVDF or polyester coating that resists fading and chalking. There are also options for vinyl or PVC-coated aluminum.
On site, the coil goes through a portable brake that bends it to fit your existing wood trim. The brake forms corners and drip edges, creating a custom-fit cap that slips over the trim. Installers secure it with non-corrosive trim nails and seal the joints with exterior-grade sealant.
Properly installed capping works with the wall’s drainage plane. It overlaps the siding or is tucked behind house wrap and flashing so water flows outward and down. This setup allows incidental water to drain away, preventing moisture from getting trapped behind the aluminum.
The top horizontal leg is sloped to shed water, and fasteners are placed into vertical surfaces or under the drip edge to avoid breaking the water-shedding plane. At the sill, a formed drip edge directs water off the trim, and the capping does not block the window’s built-in weep system.
Bylaws for Exterior Work
In the City of Vancouver, if your home is a designated heritage property or in a heritage conservation area, exterior changes like window and door capping may need a Heritage Alteration Permit. The city sees windows, doors, and their surrounds as important features, so capping that changes the exterior finish may require a heritage review before work starts.
The City of Vancouver’s Noise Control By-law limits construction noise from exterior work. On private property, capping can only happen Monday to Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. No noisy work is allowed on Sundays or holidays without an exception permit.
In the City of Surrey, the Building Bylaw requires a permit before starting construction covered by the bylaw. For window and door capping, the contractor should check with the city to see if the project needs a permit. No work can legally begin until the Building Official issues a valid permit if one is required.
