Permit Requirements
In the City of Surrey, adding a roofed patio cover to a deck needs a residential building permit. The project must follow the City of Surrey Zoning Bylaw and the BC Building Code. The contractor must submit a complete building permit application. This includes a site plan, foundation plan, floor plan, cross section, elevations, fees, and any required damage deposit before starting construction.
In Burnaby, putting in an aluminum patio cover also requires a building permit. The city allows covered deck area to be up to 8% of the total permitted gross floor area. If your existing deck is larger than that, you can only cover part of it. Your application must have engineered drawings and meet the Burnaby Building Bylaw, Zoning Bylaw, Tree Bylaw, and BC Building Code.
