Gutter Regulations
In Vancouver, eaves and gutters can extend into required yards, but they cannot project more than 1.0 m horizontally. They must also stay at least 0.7 m from a side property line. This affects how gutters are designed and placed along roof edges, especially near side lot lines.
Vancouver’s Building By-law has specific sizing requirements for gutters. It specifies the maximum hydraulic loads each size and slope can handle. Gutters must be sized and sloped according to these rules to safely carry local rainfall without overflowing.
In Coquitlam, downspouts from gutters cannot connect to foundation drains. They must discharge into the municipal storm sewer or an approved private system. Changing downspouts may need a plumbing permit.
