Paragon
A bare patio doesn’t just drive you inside—it damages your outdoor investments. The relentless summer sun bleaches cushions, warps wood furniture, and makes lunch impossible without squinting. A custom cover or pergola stops that damage and gives you back comfortable, shaded space.
These structures also let you enjoy your patio during light rain or cooler evenings—common in this area. A well-designed installation enhances curb appeal and creates an outdoor room that feels like a natural extension of your home.

Durable Outdoor Shade Solutions
An uncovered patio in Hatzic can be uncomfortable when the summer sun shines directly. That’s why homeowners choose patio covers and pergolas for Vancouver to provide shade and comfort as soon as they step outside.
Paragon Exteriors builds each structure to endure the rainy winters and sunny summers of the Lower Mainland. The finished cover becomes an outdoor room where you can entertain, grill, or relax with a cool drink.
Hatzic’s long summer days make a patio cover necessary—it can change a backyard from unused to inviting. With rising temperatures, families need a dependable outdoor escape.
Many Hatzic homes have large yards that encourage outdoor living, but without shade, they miss out on half the season. A well-designed cover cools your space and enhances your property’s exterior appeal.
Patio Cover Installation
In Hatzic, we use aluminum for patio covers because it resists corrosion and won’t rust in damp winters. For a natural look, we also offer pressure-treated cedar, which resists rot when sealed properly against the area’s moisture. Each patio cover connects to the home’s exterior wall with a ledger board. This board is anchored into the rim joist using structural screws and is flashed with a peel-and-stick membrane to direct rainwater away from the siding.
Freestanding pergolas have posts set in concrete footings below the frost line to prevent shifting during seasonal changes. Rafters are placed on a slight slope away from the house, usually one-quarter inch per foot, to help channel heavy rain into built-in gutters. This design prevents water from pooling, which can lead to algae growth. For adjustable shade, we provide louvered aluminum roofs that let you control the sunlight, and their sealed bearings stop them from seizing due to dirt carried by local winds.
A patio cover attached to a home in Hatzic must keep the building’s weather barrier intact. Our installers carefully cut the siding at the ledger line after mapping the wall to protect the house wrap. They install continuous Z-flashing that goes under the upper siding and overlaps the ledger. This setup directs water that hits the wall above outward, stopping it from seeping into the rim joist or sheathing.
To handle the area’s occasional strong winds, we design fastening patterns that go beyond standard gravity loads. Lag screws go through the ledger into the structural framing to resist uplift. Post bases at concrete footings are secured with heavy-duty anchors to prevent lateral movement. At every beam-to-post connection, we use stainless steel hardware to avoid rust-jacking from moisture, keeping the frame tight and stable as humidity changes affect wooden parts.
Hatzic Permit Requirements
For a Hatzic home, a covered patio structure attached to the house is considered building work that needs a permit under Mission’s Building Bylaw 3590-2003. A pergola or other accessory structure may also require a permit if it meets the bylaw’s size limits or involves structural work. Permit fees apply for each permit for homes and similar projects.
In residential and semi-rural zones that include Hatzic, patio covers and freestanding pergolas are seen as accessory structures. They are only allowed if there is a permitted main residential use on the lot, must meet specific height and setback limits, and cannot be used as living spaces. Placement must follow yard and lot coverage rules in the relevant Mission zone, such as S20 Suburban or RU16 Rural.
Mission’s zoning definitions view pergolas and similar outdoor structures as accessories to the main home. Very small open structures may not need a building permit, but they must still follow zoning rules: they must be accessory to an existing dwelling, stay out of required front, side, and rear yard setbacks, and not be used as a separate living space. These rules govern how and where patio covers and pergolas can be built on Hatzic lots.
