Mission’s zoning definitions view pergolas and similar outdoor structures as accessories to the main home. Very small open structures may not need a building permit, but they must still follow zoning rules: they must be accessory to an existing dwelling, stay out of required front, side, and rear yard setbacks, and not be used as a separate living space.
