Aluminum Capping Process
The first step is to measure the thickness and shape of the existing fascia board. Many homes in Coal Harbour have square-edged cedar with a beveled bottom. We cut aluminum coil to the right width and use a portable brake to bend it to match that shape. We also add a small kick-out at the base to help water drain away from the wood.
For homes near the water, we use heavy-gauge aluminum that is at least 0.024 inches thick. This material resists dents and pitting better than the lighter 0.019 material used in other areas. The coil stock has a factory-applied PVDF finish that can withstand salt spray and UV rays, which helps prevent chalking and fading. Before we cap the fascia, we check for hidden rot and treat any affected wood with a special epoxy.
Once we form the profile, we slide sections over the fascia, overlapping the ends by at least two inches. At each overlap, we inject a bead of neutral-cure butyl sealant to stop wind-driven rain from getting behind the metal. Finally, we secure the capping with color-matched ring-shank nails, driving them through the hidden vertical leg when possible to keep the face smooth and free of fasteners.
From a building perspective, the capping must work with the roof’s existing metal drip edge. When we cap the fascia, we make sure the aluminum tucks behind the drip edge flashing. This way, rainwater rolls off the shingles, over the drip edge, and into the gutter without touching the wood. This overlap also protects the top of the capping from moisture driven by the wind.
The design creates a slight gap behind the metal, allowing air to flow and any condensation to evaporate. This helps reduce the risk of rot and extends the lifespan of the fascia.
