Soft cedar siding in West Beach often signals deeper issues. Moisture can lead to decay and compromise the home’s exterior. Ignoring it will only worsen the problem.
New clear-grain siding enhances curb appeal here, providing warmth that other materials lack. When sealed correctly, it resists fading from sun and salt, offering a beautiful look with less maintenance.

Cedar Selection and Installation
For homes in West Beach, we use tight-knot or clear vertical-grain Western Red Cedar. This type of cedar has a denser grain that resists moisture and warping, which is important in the area’s high humidity. Each piece is back-primed with a special alkyd primer, and all freshly cut ends are sealed to prevent water from soaking into the wood. We use 316 stainless steel ring-shank nails that can handle the salty air without rusting.
Our carpenters pre-drill overlapping boards to avoid splitting and leave a 3/16 inch gap at butt joints for seasonal movement. We choose horizontal lap profiles like bevel or channel because they shed rain quickly, reducing standing water on the surface. A strip of building paper or bituminous tape is installed behind each joint to keep moisture from getting into the wall cavity.
To manage the constant moisture in West Beach, we build a vented rainscreen behind the cedar siding. After covering the wall sheathing with a two-layer weather-resistive barrier, we attach 1×4 wood furring strips vertically to create a 3/4 inch air gap. This gap allows any water that gets through the siding to drain down and helps airflow to dry it out, preventing decay of the wood sheathing.
At all window and door openings, we install flexible peel-and-stick membrane flashings that work with the drainage plane to direct any water back out over the siding. The bottom course of siding is raised above a stainless steel drip cap with a 1/4 inch gap, allowing water to escape easily. These details are essential in a marine environment where wind-driven rain can push water against the wall and test every joint.
