Many homes here were built before modern energy standards, with little insulation in the walls. Wrapping the exterior gives immediate comfort and protection against Bridgeport’s rain and fog.
Rigid Foam Installation
Installers start by checking the sheathing and putting on a weather-resistive barrier. In Bridgeport, where rain is common, a good building wrap is important to protect the wood structure. Then, rigid foam insulation boards, usually made of extruded polystyrene (XPS) for its moisture resistance, are attached through the sheathing into the studs using long screws and washers. This method reduces thermal bridging and keeps the foam secure against coastal winds.
All board joints are sealed with sheathing tape to make a continuous air barrier. Vertical furring strips are then screwed to the studs over the foam, creating a drainage gap behind the siding. Richmond permit requirements
Richmond states that a building permit is usually needed to add to, alter, or repair existing buildings. However, minor exterior finish repairs or replacements like siding or stucco do not need a permit. In Richmond, construction noise from exterior remodeling is only allowed during certain hours and must not exceed 85 dBA measured at 15.2 m. Richmond’s current OCP-based development permit rules require a Development Permit for exterior renovations that meet the city’s threshold. Renovations under $150,000 are generally exempt unless they are in specific areas like protected heritage properties, the Steveston Village Heritage Conservation Area, and some other special zones. In those areas, exterior insulation on a home may require permit review before starting work.
